Overweight and obesity are defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that
presents a risk to health. Body mass index (BMI) is a simple indicator of weight-for- height that
is commonly used to classify overweight and obesity in adults. It is defined as a person's weight
in kilograms divided by the square of his height in meters (kg/m2).

For adults, WHO defines overweight and obesity as follows:
1. Overweight is, a BMI greater than or equal to 25
2. Obesity is, a BMI greater than or equal to 30.

Worldwide obesity has nearly tripled since 1975. In 2017, more than 1.9 billion adults, 18 years
and older, were overweight. Of these over 650 million were obese. 39% of adults aged 18 years
and 13% were obese.

Obesity is preventable.

Understanding Obesity according to Ayurveda.

Ayurveda considered obesity as hampered conversion of medo dhaatu (fatty tissue) into other dhaatus. So what ever you consume end in medo level, causing weakness in remaining dhaatus. There will be :

  1. Increase of Agni – ie Digestion strength leading to increase of appetite and food intake.
  2. Imbalance in vata dosha
  3. Increase in Kapha dosha – caused by excess sweet food, fried food, lack of exercise etc

Causes of obesity

  1. Unhealthy eating habits – excessive intake of heavy or cold food and drinks, eating while multi-
    tasking, frequent snacking, eating processed food.
  2. Lack of proper exercise
  3. After effect of medicines or drugs
  4. Secondary to another disease
  5. Hormonal imbalance
  6. Genetic influence

Ayurvedic treatment

Ayurveda opts a comprehensible approach towards obesity treatment. Ayurveda explain,
panchakarma therapies along with few medications for metabolic correction and few lifestyle
adjustments to easily loose weight. Ayurveda never entertain quick/rapid weight reduction
technique, as they all end up in gaining back the weight. It help to loose weight in a healthy way.
The most commonly adopted therapies are Udwarthana, dhaanyamla dhaara, herbal steam,
sodhana etc.

  1. Udwarthana – It is a body scrub, with special medicated powder which help to reduce the
    superficial fat.
  2. Dhaanyamla dhaara – here there are two word Dhaanyamla and dhaara. Dhaanyamla is a
    medicated decoction prepared with herbs that can help body, burn the deep fat. Dhaara means
    pouring. So here the dhanyamla is poured over the body in proper direction for certain period of
    time.
  3. Herbal steam – the herb which help to burn fat are put into vessel with water and is boiled, the
    steam produced is allowed to pass over the body for certain period of time.
  4. Sodhana – is a procedure in Ayurveda to cleanse the toxins, or obstructions in the smaller
    channels. Once the obstructions are removed it will help the body to do proper fat metabolism.
    All these therapies are very important to be selected in proper order and duration. Along with
    corrections in lifestyle, correct diet regulations and exercise, it help to reduce your weight in a
    healthy way.
