Jaanu Vasti (Knee Care)
A specialised knee-care therapy where warm medicated oil is pooled over the knee within a black-gram dough ring, followed by oil massage and kizhi. Cannot be booked online — send an enquiry or book a free consultation first.
Jaanu Vasti is a specialised knee-care therapy in which a ring of black-gram dough is carefully built around the knee and filled with warm medicated oil, left to pool gently over the kneecap. The oil rests for roughly thirty to forty-five minutes and is continuously refreshed so it stays comfortably warm throughout, allowing its medicinal properties to soak deeply into the joint.
The pooled-oil phase is followed by a soothing oil massage and a warm Kizhi (herbal poultice) over the area, leaving the knee feeling supported, mobile and cared for.
What this therapy supports
- Lubricates the joint by helping to restore synovial fluid
- Relieves knee pain and stiffness
- Improves flexibility and range of motion
- Boosts local circulation to aid natural healing
The session, step by step
Preparatory knee massage
A gentle massage around the knee prepares the joint and surrounding tissue for the therapy.
Building the dough ring
A ring of black-gram dough is shaped and sealed around the knee to form a leak-proof reservoir.
Warm pooled oil
Deeply warm (never hot) medicated oil is poured into the well over the kneecap and refreshed to stay warm for around 30 to 45 minutes.
Soothing massage
The dough is removed and a calming oil massage is given over the knee.
Warm Kizhi
A warm herbal poultice (Kizhi) is applied to ease the area and seal in the warmth.
Jaanu Vasti is not suitable for everyone. It should be avoided where there is acute severe inflammation or a hot, swollen knee, open wounds, skin infections or burns around the knee, fever or a heavy cold, fractures or dislocations, and inflammatory joint conditions such as Aamavata or Vata Raktam. Because suitability depends entirely on your individual condition, this therapy cannot be booked online; a free consultation with our Ayurveda Vaidya is required first to confirm it is right for you.
